Urolithin A
Mitopure
Urolithin A (UA) is a natural metabolite produced by gut bacteria from ellagitannins and ellagic acid found in foods such as pomegranates, walnuts, raspberries, and strawberries. It belongs to the urolithin class of dibenzopyranone compounds. Notably, only about 40% of the human population harbors the specific gut microbiome composition needed to efficiently produce Urolithin A endogenously, which has driven interest in direct supplementation.,Urolithin A is the first compound demonstrated to stimulate mitophagy (the selective autophagy of damaged mitochondria) in humans. By activating the PINK1/Parkin mitophagy pathway, UA promotes the recycling of dysfunctional mitochondria and biogenesis of new, healthy mitochondria. This mechanism is central to its potential anti-aging effects, as mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of aging.,Amazentis, a Swiss life sciences company, developed Urolithin A as a supplement under the brand name Mitopure. It received GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status from the FDA in 2020 and is sold as a dietary supplement. Multiple clinical trials have been completed, including studies showing improved mitochondrial function and muscle endurance in healthy middle-aged and elderly adults (published in Nature Metabolism, JAMA Network Open, and Cell Reports Medicine).

How it works
Activates the PINK1/Parkin mitophagy pathway, tagging damaged mitochondria for selective autophagy.
