PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone) is a redox-active cofactor and antioxidant compound found in trace amounts in foods like fermented soybeans (natto), parsley, kiwi, papaya, green tea, and human breast milk. Discovered in 1979 as a bacterial enzyme cofactor and later characterized in mammalian biology, PQQ has unique properties: it can undergo 20,000+ catalytic redox cycles before degradation (vs ~4 for vitamin C), making it one of the most efficient natural redox cofactors known. PQQ supplementation has gained significant interest as a mitochondrial biogenesis stimulant - one of the few compounds that reliably increases the number of mitochondria in cells.,PQQ's primary research interest is mitochondrial biogenesis - the process by which cells generate new mitochondria. While compounds like NR/NMN, resveratrol, and exercise stimulate mitochondrial efficiency and function, PQQ uniquely activates the master regulators of mitochondrial number (PGC-1alpha, NRF1, NRF2) leading to increased mitochondrial mass within cells.
