Saw Palmetto's lipidosterolic extract has multiple effects:

Mild 5-α-Reductase Inhibition

Reduces conversion of testosterone to DHT - mechanism shared with finasteride/dutasteride but much weaker. Basis of BPH and hair loss applications.

Anti-Androgenic Receptor Effects

Some evidence for direct androgen receptor antagonism beyond 5-α-reductase.

Anti-Inflammatory

COX and 5-LOX modulation - reduces prostatic inflammation.

β-Sitosterol Component

Plant sterol with separate evidence for BPH symptom relief.

Distinct from Finasteride
