Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like substance that exudes from rock fissures in the Himalayas, Altai, Caucasus, and Andes mountains. It's formed over centuries from decomposed plant material under high pressure. Active compounds include fulvic acid (60-80% of purified Shilajit), humic acid, dibenzo-α-pyrones (DBPs), trace minerals (iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, copper), and various antioxidants.

How it works

Shilajit's bioactive compound profile drives multiple effects:

Fulvic Acid

Major component (60-80% of purified Shilajit). Antioxidant; mineral chelator that may improve bioavailability of trace minerals.

DBPs (Dibenzo-α-Pyrones)

Mitochondrial CoQ-like activity; supports mitochondrial energy production.

Trace Minerals

Iron, zinc, copper, magnesium, calcium - bioavailable form via fulvic acid chelation.

T Support Mechanism

Clinical trials show 12-20% serum T increase in older men over 90 days. Mechanism unclear - may involve hypothalamic-pituitary modulation, antioxidant protection of testicular function, or mineral support.

Sperm Parameters

Improves sperm count, motility, and morphology in subfertile men.

Mitochondrial Bioenergetics

DBPs and CoQ-like activity support cellular energy.
