Cistanche (Cistanche tubulosa, Cistanche deserticola, called Rou Cong Rong in TCM) is a parasitic plant that grows on the roots of desert shrubs in Asia. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for kidney yang deficiency, libido support, and longevity. Modern research focuses on echinacoside and verbascoside as primary bioactives.

How it works

Cistanche bioactives include phenylethanoid glycosides:

Echinacoside

Antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory. Crosses BBB to some extent.

Verbascoside (Acteoside)

Similar profile - antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

Polysaccharides

Immune-modulating, similar to other adaptogen polysaccharide classes.

Mild HPG Effects

Some studies show modest LH/testicular effects but smaller than Tongkat Ali.

Neuroprotection

Multiple studies in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease models showing neuroprotective effects.

Claims we could not support

No abstract we checked supports these for this molecule at this route. That is not the same as saying they are false — it marks where the evidence is missing.

Dose/route: 300-500 mg orally 1-2 times daily. No checked human abstract administered an exact Cistanche-only product at this regimen. One exact C. deserticola trial used 5 g extract twice daily, and a cognitive trial combined Cistanche with Ginkgo.

Mechanism for the displayed oral product. Checked abstracts covered heterogeneous species, extracts, isolated echinacoside/acteoside, combination products, or animal/cell models; none supported the page’s combined mechanism for the displayed product and population.

Primary safety / long-term tolerability at 300-500 mg. No checked exact-product human abstract established long-term safety at the page dose. Combination-product tolerability cannot be transferred to Cistanche alone.
