Quercetin is a polyphenolic flavonoid found abundantly in onions (especially red), capers, kale, apples, broccoli, berries, and tea. It is one of the most-consumed dietary flavonoids globally (typical Western intake 5-40mg/day from food) and one of the most-studied senolytic agents - compounds that selectively eliminate senescent ('zombie') cells that accumulate with age and contribute to age-related pathology. Pure Quercetin gained mainstream longevity attention through Mayo Clinic researcher James Kirkland's pioneering work pairing it with the cancer drug dasatinib in the 'D+Q' senolytic protocol.,Quercetin's biological effects span multiple pathways: it acts as a potent antioxidant (radical scavenger), anti-inflammatory (NF-kB inhibition), AMPK activator, mast cell stabilizer (reducing histamine release), antiviral (zinc ionophore activity, demonstrated against influenza, SARS-CoV-2 in vitro), and senolytic (preferentially apoptotic to senescent cells). The senolytic mechanism involves inhibition of the BCL-2 family anti-apoptotic proteins that protect senescent cells from clearance.,Bioavailability of quercetin from supplements has historically been a limitation - aglycone form is poorly absorbed (~3-5%). Modern formulations (phytosome / Quercetin Phytosome / EMIQ enzymatically modified isoquercitrin) achieve 10-20x improvement. How it works

Quercetin's senolytic mechanism involves inhibition of multiple anti-apoptotic 'SCAPs' (senescent cell anti-apoptotic pathway) proteins including BCL-XL, BCL-W, and PI3K/AKT signaling. Senescent cells upregulate these survival pathways to resist apoptosis; quercetin selectively destabilizes them, reactivating apoptosis preferentially in senescent vs healthy cells. The Kirkland lab D+Q protocol pairs quercetin (which targets BCL-XL/BCL-W and PI3K) with dasatinib (which targets ephrin-dependent senescent cell types) for broader senolytic coverage.,Beyond senolysis, quercetin acts as an AMPK activator (similar to other polyphenols like resveratrol), inducing mitochondrial biogenesis via PGC-1alpha and supporting cellular energy homeostasis. It inhibits NF-kB inflammatory signaling, reducing TNF-alpha, IL-6, and other pro-inflammatory cytokines. Effects sustained with daily dosing for chronic uses (BP, inflammation). Senolytic effects from pulse dosing develop over 1-2 weeks post-pulse.

Storage. Store at room temperature (20-25C) in a cool, dry, dark place. Light and moisture-sensitive - keep in opaque containers. Capsules shelf-stable for 24+ months. Powder may oxidize and darken with prolonged exposure to air.

Classified as a dietary supplement in the US (no FDA pre-approval). Available widely over the counter. EU permits quercetin as a food supplement. Generally Recognized as Safe at typical supplement doses. Dasatinib (the D+Q partner drug) is FDA-approved for chronic myeloid leukemia and ALL - prescription only.
