Krill Oil

Krill Oil is extracted from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) - small shrimp-like crustaceans that form one of the largest biomass species on Earth. Krill oil contains omega-3 fatty acids (EPA + DHA) attached to phospholipids (mainly phosphatidylcholine) rather than triglycerides as in fish oil. This phospholipid structure is theorized to provide better bioavailability and tissue distribution, and is often cited by manufacturers as making krill oil 'more potent than fish oil.' Krill oil also naturally contains astaxanthin (the red pigment that gives krill its color), choline, and trace amounts of vitamins A and E.,Krill oil's unique selling proposition centers on three claims: (1) phospholipid-bound omega-3s are better absorbed than triglyceride-bound omega-3s in fish oil, (2) the natural astaxanthin content (~150mcg per gram) provides additional antioxidant protection, and (3) the phosphatidylcholine content supports brain health and provides choline. Clinical evidence for these claims is mixed - bioavailability studies show modest absorption advantage (10-50% better than fish oil) but most clinical endpoints show similar effects when matched for EPA/DHA content. Krill oil is less concentrated than fish oil (typically 200-300mg EPA/DHA per gram vs 600-800mg in concentrated fish oil), so achieving therapeutic doses requires more capsules.,Despite the bioavailability debate, krill oil has demonstrated specific benefits for joint health and inflammation (especially in mild osteoarthritis), cardiovascular markers (modest improvements in lipid panel), and women's health (PMS symptom reduction in some studies). The astaxanthin content provides natural antioxidant protection that's absent in regular fish oil. Standard supplemental doses range from 1-3 grams daily of krill oil providing ~200-600mg combined EPA+DHA. Sustainability concerns about krill harvesting have driven some users back to fish oil or algal omega-3, though Antarctic krill harvesting is currently considered sustainable by MSC certification.
Take with a meal containing fat (improves absorption). 1-3g/day for general support; higher (3-4g/day) for therapeutic cardiovascular use. Look for MSC certified, third-party tested products. Krill oil typically doesn't cause fish burps (a common complaint with fish oil).
