Krill Oil is extracted from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) - small shrimp-like crustaceans that form one of the largest biomass species on Earth. Krill oil contains omega-3 fatty acids (EPA + DHA) attached to phospholipids (mainly phosphatidylcholine) rather than triglycerides as in fish oil. This phospholipid structure is theorized to provide better bioavailability and tissue distribution, and is often cited by manufacturers as making krill oil 'more potent than fish oil.' How it works

Krill oil's primary mechanism is delivery of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) bound to phospholipids - particularly phosphatidylcholine. The phospholipid-bound omega-3s are theorized to integrate more efficiently into cell membranes (especially brain and cardiovascular tissues) compared to triglyceride-bound omega-3s in fish oil. EPA and DHA produce their effects through multiple mechanisms: incorporation into membrane phospholipids (improving fluidity and receptor function), production of anti-inflammatory eicosanoids (resolvins, protectins, maresins), modulation of inflammatory gene expression (NF-kB inhibition), and effects on lipid metabolism (PPAR-alpha activation reducing triglyceride synthesis).

The astaxanthin component (a powerful carotenoid antioxidant) provides additional benefits beyond omega-3 content. Astaxanthin crosses the blood-brain barrier and blood-retinal barrier, providing antioxidant protection in CNS and ocular tissues. It also has anti-inflammatory effects through different pathways than omega-3s, and protects mitochondrial membranes. The astaxanthin content (~150mcg/gram krill oil) contributes to krill oil's joint health and skin protection profiles.

The phosphatidylcholine component provides choline (~30-50mg/gram krill oil), which supports acetylcholine synthesis, phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis for neuronal membranes, and methylation cycle (TMG/betaine formation). For users not getting adequate choline through diet (eggs, organ meats), krill oil's choline content provides supplementary support. The combined nutrients (omega-3 + astaxanthin + choline) make krill oil's effects somewhat broader than pure omega-3 supplementation.
