Krill Oil is extracted from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) - small shrimp-like crustaceans that form one of the largest biomass species on Earth. Krill oil contains omega-3 fatty acids (EPA + DHA) attached to phospholipids (mainly phosphatidylcholine) rather than triglycerides as in fish oil. This phospholipid structure is theorized to provide better bioavailability and tissue distribution, and is often cited by manufacturers as making krill oil 'more potent than fish oil.' Krill oil also naturally contains astaxanthin (the red pigment that gives krill its color), choline, and trace amounts of vitamins A and E.,Krill oil's unique selling proposition centers on three claims: (1) phospholipid-bound omega-3s are better absorbed than triglyceride-bound omega-3s in fish oil, (2) the natural astaxanthin content (~150mcg per gram) provides additional antioxidant protection, and (3) the phosphatidylcholine content supports brain health and provides choline. How it works

Krill oil's primary mechanism is delivery of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) bound to phospholipids - particularly phosphatidylcholine. The phospholipid-bound omega-3s are theorized to integrate more efficiently into cell membranes (especially brain and cardiovascular tissues) compared to triglyceride-bound omega-3s in fish oil.
