Immunoglobulin transfer: bovine IgG, IgA, and IgM in colostrum are functionally active in the human gut. They bind and neutralize bacterial pathogens (E. coli, C. difficile, Clostridium, Salmonella), viruses (rotavirus, norovirus), and toxins. This is essentially passive immunization at the gut mucosal surface.
Lactoferrin: an iron-binding protein with broad antimicrobial activity (binds iron away from pathogens), prebiotic effects (supports beneficial bacteria), and immune modulation. Lactoferrin alone is a recognized active compound and bovine lactoferrin is bioavailable in humans.
Growth factors: IGF-1, EGF, TGF-beta, and PDGF in colostrum support intestinal epithelial cell proliferation, tight junction protein expression (sealing 'leaky gut'), and tissue repair. These growth factors act locally in the gut mucosa.
Proline-rich polypeptides (PRPs): immune-modulating peptides that can both up- and down-regulate immune responses depending on context - useful for both autoimmune and immunodeficient states.
Oligosaccharides: bovine milk oligosaccharides (BMOs) function as prebiotics, supporting beneficial gut bacteria (Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus). Similar in some ways to human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs).
Cytokines and growth modulation: colostrum contains TGF-beta and other cytokines that modulate gut immune responses and support tolerance/anti-inflammatory states.
Lysozyme: enzyme that breaks down bacterial cell walls, providing antimicrobial activity in gut lumen.
