Colostrum (Bovine)
Bovine Colostrum
Colostrum is the 'first milk' produced by mammals in the first 24-72 hours after giving birth. It is dramatically different from regular milk - colostrum is concentrated with immunoglobulins (especially IgG, IgA, IgM), growth factors (IGF-1, IGF-2, EGF, TGF-beta, PDGF, VEGF), lactoferrin, lysozyme, cytokines, oligosaccharides, and bioactive peptides. Its function in nature is to provide passive immunity and growth signals to the newborn during the critical period before its own immune system matures.,Bovine (cow) colostrum is the most studied form for human supplementation. Cow colostrum contains 100-1,000x higher immunoglobulin content than human colostrum, and the immunoglobulins (especially IgG) are functionally active in humans. Quality colostrum supplements are sourced from grass-fed dairy cows and processed at low temperatures to preserve bioactive components.,Colostrum has been used clinically for over 50 years for gut health (especially leaky gut and post-antibiotic recovery), immune support, athletic recovery, and exercise-induced GI issues. The immunoglobulins specifically help neutralize gut pathogens and support intestinal barrier function. The growth factors support gut mucosal healing and may benefit muscle recovery and joint health.
Best taken on empty stomach (away from meals) for optimal IgG absorption to gut surfaces. Morning or before bed are good options. Powder form mixes in cool water (heat denatures bioactive proteins). For acute illness or training stress, can increase to 10-20g/day temporarily.
