Bee Propolis is a resinous substance produced by bees from plant resins, beeswax, and bee saliva. Bees use it to seal hive cracks and as antimicrobial protection. Composition varies dramatically by geographic source - Brazilian Green Propolis (Baccharis-derived), Brazilian Red Propolis (Dalbergia-derived), and European Poplar Propolis are the three major commercially-available types, each with distinct chemistry.

How it works

Propolis bioactives drive multiple effects:

CAPE (Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester)

Major bioactive in European Poplar Propolis. NF-κB inhibitor with anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and immunomodulating effects.

Flavonoids

Galangin, chrysin, pinocembrin, etc. - antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral.

Antimicrobial

Direct activity against bacteria (S. mutans, S. aureus), viruses (herpes simplex), and fungi (Candida).

Anti-Inflammatory

NF-κB modulation, COX inhibition.

Geographic Variation

Brazilian Green Propolis is rich in artepillin C; Brazilian Red Propolis is rich in retusapurpurin and isoflavones; European Propolis is rich in CAPE. Different applications may favor different types.

Mechanism: propolis can downregulate TLR4/MyD88/IRAK4/TRIF/NLRP/NF-kB pathways and associated inflammatory cytokines.

In general, we summarize that propolis acts as an anti-inflammatory substance by inhibiting and downregulating TLR4, MyD88, IRAK4, TRIF, NLRP inflammasomes, NF-κB, and their associated pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, IFN-γ, and TNF-α.

Topical route/effect and safety boundary: a meta-analysis found topical propolis/honey improved herpes lesion healing with adverse-event rates comparable to topical acyclovir.

No significant difference was observed in adverse events (AEs) rates between the natural therapy and acyclovir groups.ConclusionsPropolis and/or honey demonstrated superior lesion healing and pain relief compared to 5% acyclovir, with comparable safety, supporting their potential as safe and effective alternatives to conventional antiviral therapy.

Claims we could not support

No abstract we checked supports these for this molecule at this route. That is not the same as saying they are false — it marks where the evidence is missing.

Oral dose: 200-1,000 mg daily 1-3x/day. No checked abstract verified this oral dose range for a defined propolis preparation.

Primary safety concern: bee-product allergy. The checked abstracts did not state the card’s allergy warning in a supporting abstract sentence.
