L-Glutamine
Glutamine
L-Glutamine is a conditionally essential amino acid - normally synthesized by the body but becomes essential during severe stress, illness, or trauma. It is the most abundant free amino acid in skeletal muscle and plasma. Glutamine is the primary fuel source for enterocytes (gut lining cells) and immune cells (lymphocytes, macrophages), making it relevant for gut health and immune function.
Post-workout for recovery; with meals for gut support.
Start here. Every protocol below is ordered lowest-first. Begin at the smallest effective dose, hold about a week to assess tolerance, and step up only if needed.
How it works
L-Glutamine has multiple metabolic roles:
Enterocyte Fuel
Primary energy source for intestinal lining cells. Supports tight junction integrity and barrier function.
Immune Cell Fuel
Lymphocytes and macrophages depend on glutamine. During heavy training or illness, glutamine demand exceeds supply - supplementation may support immune function.
Glutathione Synthesis
Glutamine is a precursor for glutamate, which combines with cysteine and glycine to form glutathione (master antioxidant).
Nitrogen Transport
Major nitrogen carrier in the body; supports nitrogen balance during catabolic states.
Ammonia Buffering
Glutamine synthesis and breakdown serves as a nitrogen/ammonia transport system.
Muscle Protein Synthesis
Modest direct anabolic effect; mainly works as recovery substrate.
What to expect
Days: gut support effects begin.
Weeks: cumulative recovery and immune effects.
Long-term: continued use sustains effects.

Side effects & safety
Commonly reported
- Mild GI upset at very high doses (>30g)
Less common & notes
- Allergic reactions rare.
- Long-term safety good per dietary intake.
Pharmacokinetics
Storage. Powder/capsule. Cool dry location. Hygroscopic - keep sealed.
Regulatory status
Dietary supplement (US, DSHEA). Pharmaceutical use in EU/critical care contexts.
