Fat-Soluble AntioxidantTocopherols + Tocotrienols

Vitamin E is a family of 8 fat-soluble compounds: 4 tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta) and 4 tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta). Most supplements provide alpha-tocopherol primarily, but mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols capture the broader vitamin E family.

How it works

Vitamin E family acts as fat-soluble antioxidants:

Lipid Membrane Antioxidant

Protects polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes from peroxidation.

Alpha-Tocopherol

Most-recognized form; primary serum vitamin E.

Gamma-Tocopherol

Often displaced by alpha-tocopherol supplementation; has unique anti-inflammatory effects.

Tocotrienols

Separate class with cholesterol-reducing (HMG-CoA reductase modulation), cardiovascular, and possibly anti-cancer effects.

Mixed Tocopherols Preferred

Single-form alpha-tocopherol supplements may displace other forms - mixed tocopherols generally preferred.

Working with Vitamin C

Vitamin E is regenerated from oxidized form by Vitamin C.

Side effects & safety

Commonly reported

  • Generally well-tolerated at standard doses

Less common & notes

  • Bleeding risk at high doses with anticoagulants.
  • Possible heart failure increase with high-dose alpha-tocopherol monotherapy.
