Crocus sativus StigmaMild Antidepressant BotanicalMood / Anxiety SupportDietary Supplement

Saffron (Crocus sativus) is the dried stigma of the saffron crocus flower, valued as both a culinary spice and a medicinal compound. Active compounds include crocin, crocetin, picrocrocin, and safranal. Modern clinical research focuses on mood (mild-to-moderate depression), anxiety, and sleep - meta-analyses show effect sizes comparable to standard SSRIs in mild-to-moderate depression with better tolerability.

How it works

Saffron's actions are attributed to multiple bioactives:

Crocin

Carotenoid; antioxidant and possible NMDA modulation. Proposed mechanism for cognitive and mood effects.

Safranal

Volatile aldehyde; serotonergic and dopaminergic modulation. Likely contributor to antidepressant effect.

SSRI-Like Activity

Multiple studies show saffron has comparable efficacy to fluoxetine and other SSRIs in mild-to-moderate depression with fewer GI and sexual side effects.

Anxiolytic

GABAergic modulation possible; clinical data shows reduced anxiety scores.

Sleep

Improved sleep quality measures in trials, mechanism unclear.

Color Vision (high-dose marker)

Yellow vision tinge at supratherapeutic doses serves as overdose marker.
