Lithium Orotate is a low-dose lithium salt formed by combining lithium with orotic acid - a precursor in pyrimidine biosynthesis. Unlike pharmaceutical lithium carbonate (used for bipolar disorder at 600-1800mg/day delivering 100-300mg elemental lithium), Lithium Orotate is sold as a dietary supplement at low doses delivering only 1-20mg elemental lithium per capsule. The low-dose lithium concept is based on the hypothesis that humans are widely deficient in trace lithium (which occurs naturally in drinking water at varying concentrations) and that supplementation at sub-pharmaceutical doses provides neuroprotective and mood-stabilizing benefits without the toxicity concerns of full-dose lithium therapy.,Trace lithium intake from drinking water has been correlated in multiple ecological studies with reduced suicide rates, reduced violent crime, and reduced dementia incidence. Schrauzer's foundational 1990 study of 27 Texas counties showed counties with lithium-rich water had significantly lower rates of suicide, homicide, and arrests. This 'trace lithium' hypothesis underlies the use of low-dose Lithium Orotate as a daily supplement.,Modern Lithium Orotate use focuses on mood stabilization (anxiety, mild depression, irritability), cognitive support / Alzheimer's prevention (lithium has GSK-3 inhibitor activity demonstrated in AD pathology), and adjunctive support for bipolar spectrum / cyclothymia (under medical supervision). The compound has favorable safety profile at supplement doses (1-20mg elemental lithium per capsule) - far below the 0.6-1.2 mEq/L therapeutic range that requires monitoring. Standard supplemental doses range from 5-20mg elemental lithium daily, often as Lithium Orotate 120mg providing 5mg elemental lithium.

How it works
