Lithium Orotate is a low-dose lithium salt formed by combining lithium with orotic acid - a precursor in pyrimidine biosynthesis. Unlike pharmaceutical lithium carbonate (used for bipolar disorder at 600-1800mg/day delivering 100-300mg elemental lithium), Lithium Orotate is sold as a dietary supplement at low doses delivering only 1-20mg elemental lithium per capsule. The low-dose lithium concept is based on the hypothesis that humans are widely deficient in trace lithium (which occurs naturally in drinking water at varying concentrations) and that supplementation at sub-pharmaceutical doses provides neuroprotective and mood-stabilizing benefits without the toxicity concerns of full-dose lithium therapy.,Trace lithium intake from drinking water has been correlated in multiple ecological studies with reduced suicide rates, reduced violent crime, and reduced dementia incidence.
