Traditional Chinese MedicineAdaptogen / Energy Support

Cordyceps refers to a genus of medicinal fungi, with two species predominantly used in supplements: Cordyceps sinensis (the original wild Tibetan caterpillar fungus) and Cordyceps militaris (cultivated, more available). Used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries for energy, endurance, and respiratory health. The cultivated militaris form is dramatically more available and affordable than wild sinensis.

How it works

Cordyceps' actions are attributed to multiple bioactive compounds:

Cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine)

Adenosine analog with diverse effects on RNA polymerase, adenosine receptors, and energy metabolism.

Polysaccharides

β-glucans and related polysaccharides are immunomodulatory - activate macrophages, NK cells, and cytokine networks similar to other medicinal mushroom polysaccharides.

Oxygen Utilization

Mechanistically unclear but consistent across small trials - cordyceps appears to improve oxygen uptake efficiency at submaximal exercise. May involve mitochondrial efficiency.

Adaptogenic

Modest stress-resistance and fatigue-reduction effects in chronic stress models.

Adenosine Effects

Cordycepin is structurally close to adenosine - may modulate adenosine receptor signaling, including effects on energy metabolism and inflammation.

Claims we could not support

No abstract we checked supports these for this molecule at this route. That is not the same as saying they are false — it marks where the evidence is missing.

Quick-start dose/route: 1-3 g oral capsule or powder 1-3x daily. GAP — UNSUPPORTED NONSTANDARDIZED PRODUCT. PMID 38501161 administered 1 g Cordyceps sinensis before exercise but did not identify an oral capsule/powder formulation in the abstract; PMID 27408987 used a 4 g multi-mushroom blend.

Mechanism: cordycepin, beta-glucans, oxygen-utilization, and adaptogenic signaling. No checked abstract supported this composite mechanism for a defined species, extract, formulation, route, and human population.

Primary safety: GI upset, fungal allergy, or bleeding risk. No checked human abstract supported these claims. Embedded PMIDs 20629583 and 30048702 resolve to unrelated papers; PMID 24447782 returned no PubMed article in live EFetch.

Side effects & safety

Commonly reported

  • Mild GI upset
  • Dry mouth
  • Mild stimulant effect

Less common & notes

  • Allergic reactions to fungal protein.
  • Theoretical bleeding risk at high doses (cordycepin antiplatelet potential).
  • Long-term safety good per traditional use.
