Yerba Mate
Ilex paraguariensis
Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a South American holly leaf traditionally consumed as tea (mate) in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil. Contains caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline (the three major xanthine alkaloids), plus chlorogenic acid, saponins, and polyphenols. Effects similar to but distinct from coffee - smoother stimulation with less anxiety/jitteriness.
Starting dose. 1-2 cups tea or 500mg-1g extract
Morning or pre-workout.
Start here. Every protocol below is ordered lowest-first. Begin at the smallest effective dose, hold about a week to assess tolerance, and step up only if needed.
How it works
Yerba Mate's effects come from its xanthine alkaloid profile:
Caffeine
Adenosine A1/A2A antagonist - standard wakefulness mechanism. Yerba Mate contains 30-50mg/cup vs coffee's 95mg/cup - milder stimulation.
Theobromine
Cocoa's main xanthine. Mild vasodilator and bronchodilator. Smoother, longer-lasting stimulation than caffeine alone.
Theophylline
Tea xanthine. Bronchodilator and vasodilator.
Combined Profile
The three-xanthine combination produces smoother, longer-lasting stimulation with less anxiety/jitteriness than equivalent coffee dose.
Chlorogenic Acid
Modest blood sugar regulation and cardiovascular benefits.
Polyphenols
Antioxidant effects.
What to expect
Acute caffeine onset 30-60 min.
Weeks 4-12: peak weight loss/cardiovascular effects.
Long-term continuous use OK at moderate doses.

Claims we could not support
No abstract we checked supports these for this molecule at this route. That is not the same as saying they are false — it marks where the evidence is missing.
Exact-molecule abstract evidence. ESearch was run and 2 source-candidate PMIDs were EFetch-checked; no usable exact-molecule abstract sentence was found.
Dose/route: 1-2 cups tea or 500mg-1g extract; Oral tea, capsule, or extract; 1-3x daily. No selected live abstract sentence verified this complete regimen.
