Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a South American holly leaf traditionally consumed as tea (mate) in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil. How it works

Yerba Mate's effects come from its xanthine alkaloid profile:

Caffeine

Adenosine A1/A2A antagonist - standard wakefulness mechanism. Yerba Mate contains 30-50mg/cup vs coffee's 95mg/cup - milder stimulation.

Theobromine

Cocoa's main xanthine. Mild vasodilator and bronchodilator. Smoother, longer-lasting stimulation than caffeine alone.

Theophylline

Tea xanthine. Bronchodilator and vasodilator.

Combined Profile

The three-xanthine combination produces smoother, longer-lasting stimulation with less anxiety/jitteriness than equivalent coffee dose.

Chlorogenic Acid

Modest blood sugar regulation and cardiovascular benefits.

Polyphenols
