Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is a sulfur-containing amino acid derivative synthesized endogenously from cysteine and methionine. Unlike typical amino acids, taurine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid - it is not incorporated into proteins but instead functions as a free amino acid in high concentrations throughout the body. Taurine is the most abundant free amino acid in excitable tissues: the heart (~50% of total free amino acid pool), retina, brain, skeletal muscle, and leukocytes.

How it works

Taurine's cardiac effects are mediated through multiple mechanisms: it modulates calcium handling in cardiomyocytes (both uptake and efflux via the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger), stabilizes membrane potential, enhances mitochondrial function, and protects against ischemia-reperfusion injury. Taurine deficiency causes cardiomyopathy in cats (who cannot synthesize it) and contributes to heart failure progression in humans.

Taurine conjugates to cholesterol-derived bile acids (forming taurocholate), facilitating fat and fat-soluble vitamin absorption. This bile conjugation is a major endogenous consumption pathway for taurine and explains why cholestatic conditions can deplete body stores.

In the nervous system, taurine acts as a partial agonist at GABA-A and glycine receptors, providing inhibitory neurotransmission and calming effects. It also regulates intracellular calcium in neurons and provides osmoregulation (taurine efflux during cell swelling).

Taurine is a potent antioxidant, scavenging hypochlorous acid (produced by neutrophil myeloperoxidase) and reducing oxidative damage. It also improves insulin signaling and glucose uptake via GLUT4 translocation, supporting metabolic health.

The Columbia 2023 findings (Singh et al. in Science) showed taurine levels decline dramatically with age in mice, monkeys, and humans, and restoring taurine via supplementation extends mouse lifespan ~10-12% and improves markers of aging (bone density, muscle strength, cognitive function).
