Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is a sulfur-containing amino acid derivative synthesized endogenously from cysteine and methionine. Unlike typical amino acids, taurine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid - it is not incorporated into proteins but instead functions as a free amino acid in high concentrations throughout the body. Taurine is the most abundant free amino acid in excitable tissues: the heart (~50% of total free amino acid pool), retina, brain, skeletal muscle, and leukocytes.,Taurine has roles in cardiac function, bile acid conjugation, calcium signaling, osmoregulation, membrane stabilization, antioxidant defense, and modulation of inhibitory neurotransmission via GABA and glycine receptors. Humans synthesize only modest amounts (~50-125 mg/day) and the rest must come from diet (primarily seafood and meat) or supplements. Vegans and vegetarians have significantly lower taurine levels.,Interest in taurine exploded in 2023 with publication of the Columbia study (Singh et al.) demonstrating taurine deficiency as a driver of aging in mice, monkeys, and humans, with supplementation extending healthspan and lifespan in animal models. How it works
