Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is a sulfur-containing amino acid derivative synthesized endogenously from cysteine and methionine. Unlike typical amino acids, taurine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid - it is not incorporated into proteins but instead functions as a free amino acid in high concentrations throughout the body. Taurine is the most abundant free amino acid in excitable tissues: the heart (~50% of total free amino acid pool), retina, brain, skeletal muscle, and leukocytes.,Taurine has roles in cardiac function, bile acid conjugation, calcium signaling, osmoregulation, membrane stabilization, antioxidant defense, and modulation of inhibitory neurotransmission via GABA and glycine receptors. Humans synthesize only modest amounts (~50-125 mg/day) and the rest must come from diet (primarily seafood and meat) or supplements. Vegans and vegetarians have significantly lower taurine levels.,Interest in taurine exploded in 2023 with publication of the Columbia study (Singh et al.) demonstrating taurine deficiency as a driver of aging in mice, monkeys, and humans, with supplementation extending healthspan and lifespan in animal models. Combined with decades of cardiovascular research, taurine has emerged as one of the most compelling longevity and cardiometabolic supplements available.

How it works

Taurine's cardiac effects are mediated through multiple mechanisms: it modulates calcium handling in cardiomyocytes (both uptake and efflux via the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger), stabilizes membrane potential, enhances mitochondrial function, and protects against ischemia-reperfusion injury. Taurine deficiency causes cardiomyopathy in cats (who cannot synthesize it) and contributes to heart failure progression in humans.,Taurine conjugates to cholesterol-derived bile acids (forming taurocholate), facilitating fat and fat-soluble vitamin absorption. This bile conjugation is a major endogenous consumption pathway for taurine and explains why cholestatic conditions can deplete body stores.,In the nervous system, taurine acts as a partial agonist at GABA-A and glycine receptors, providing inhibitory neurotransmission and calming effects. It also regulates intracellular calcium in neurons and provides osmoregulation (taurine efflux during cell swelling).,Taurine is a potent antioxidant, scavenging hypochlorous acid (produced by neutrophil myeloperoxidase) and reducing oxidative damage. CaffeineEnergy drink combo is common but taurine may modestly offset some caffeine-induced cardiovascular effects (tachycardia, BP rise). Generally well-tolerated together.
