Astaxanthin is a red-orange xanthophyll carotenoid produced primarily by the freshwater microalga Haematococcus pluvialis under stress conditions. It accumulates up the marine food chain - giving salmon, krill, shrimp, and flamingos their characteristic pink-red color. Among carotenoids, astaxanthin has unique structural features (ketone groups at the terminal rings) that make it dramatically more potent as an antioxidant than beta-carotene, lycopene, or vitamin E.,Astaxanthin's antioxidant capacity is ~6,000x stronger than vitamin C, ~800x stronger than CoQ10, ~75x stronger than alpha-lipoic acid, and ~550x stronger than vitamin E in singlet oxygen quenching. Critically, unlike vitamin E which can become pro-oxidant when oxidized, astaxanthin does not become pro-oxidant - making it safe at high doses.,Astaxanthin is fat-soluble and crosses the blood-brain barrier, blood-retinal barrier, and integrates into cell membranes - protecting both the lipid and aqueous compartments of cells. It is particularly studied for skin health (UV protection, elasticity), eye health (macular pigment, eye fatigue), cardiovascular function (lipid oxidation prevention), exercise recovery, and joint health.
Take with a meal containing fat - absorption is 3-fold higher with dietary fat. Single daily dose adequate due to long tissue half-life. Morning dosing typical. Effects build over weeks - be patient.

Astaxanthin is the most potent natural singlet oxygen quencher known. Singlet oxygen is generated by UV exposure, mitochondrial respiration, and inflammation. By quenching singlet oxygen, astaxanthin prevents lipid peroxidation in cell membranes, protein oxidation, and DNA damage.,Membrane-spanning antioxidant: astaxanthin's unique molecular structure allows it to span the entire phospholipid bilayer with polar ends in the aqueous compartments and the carotenoid backbone in the lipid layer. This protects both compartments from oxidation simultaneously - unlike vitamin E (lipid only) or vitamin C (aqueous only).,Anti-inflammatory: astaxanthin downregulates NF-kB signaling, reducing TNF-alpha, IL-1, and IL-6 production. It inhibits 5-lipoxygenase and reduces leukotriene production.,Skin: dermal accumulation provides UV protection (similar mechanism to plant melanin), prevents matrix metalloproteinase degradation of collagen, and reduces wrinkle formation. Works as 'internal sunscreen' - several weeks of supplementation increases minimal erythemal dose by ~20-40%.,Eye: crosses blood-retinal barrier and accumulates in macula.
