Oxytocin is a naturally occurring nine-amino-acid neuropeptide hormone produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland. Often called the 'love hormone' or 'bonding hormone,' it plays critical roles in social bonding, sexual reproduction, childbirth, and lactation. Synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin) has been FDA-approved since the 1980s for induction of labor and control of postpartum hemorrhage.,Beyond its established obstetric uses, oxytocin has become the subject of extensive research into its effects on social behavior, trust, anxiety, and emotional processing. Intranasal administration allows the peptide to partially bypass the blood-brain barrier, and this route is used in most behavioral research. Subcutaneous oxytocin is also used in clinical and research settings for its peripheral and central effects.,Oxytocin's role extends beyond social behavior. It has anti-inflammatory properties, influences pain perception, regulates appetite, and affects cardiovascular function. Clinical trials have investigated its potential in autism spectrum disorder, social anxiety, PTSD, and depression, though results have been mixed and the field is still evolving.
