How it works

Sodium Bicarbonate buffers extracellular pH:

Bicarbonate Buffer

HCO3- combines with H+ ions diffusing out of muscle cells to form carbonic acid → CO2 + water (exhaled). Net effect: extracellular pH stays higher.

Time-Domain Specific

Most effective for 60-180 second efforts where lactic acidosis is rate-limiting. Less effective for shorter sprints (<30 sec) or longer endurance (>10 min).

Distinct from Beta-Alanine

Beta-Alanine raises intramuscular carnosine for INTRACELLULAR buffering; bicarbonate works extracellularly. Often combined for additive effect.

Acute Mechanism

Single-dose loading 60-90 min pre-event. Some users adopt chronic loading protocols (multiple smaller doses over days) to reduce acute GI burden.

Sodium Load

Performance dose (~21g) contains ~5.7g sodium - significant for users on sodium restriction.
