Serrapeptase
Serratiopeptidase · Serratia E-15
Serrapeptase (Serratiopeptidase) is a proteolytic enzyme originally isolated from the silkworm gut bacterium Serratia E-15 (now produced via fermentation). Used in Asia and Europe since the 1960s for inflammation, pain, and mucolytic applications. Available as pharmaceutical drug in Japan, Italy, and other countries; sold as dietary supplement in the US.
Empty stomach essential.
Start here. Every protocol below is ordered lowest-first. Begin at the smallest effective dose, hold about a week to assess tolerance, and step up only if needed.
How it works
Serrapeptase is a 30 kDa metalloprotease:
Mucolytic
Hydrolyzes mucus glycoproteins, thinning thick mucus secretions in sinusitis, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis.
Anti-Inflammatory
Hydrolyzes bradykinin, fibrin, and inflammatory exudates - reduces edema and pain.
Fibrinolytic
Breaks down fibrin (cross-linked protein) - mechanism for proposed cardiovascular plaque effects.
Enteric Coating Critical
Stomach acid degrades serrapeptase. Enteric-coated tablets release in the alkaline small intestine for absorption.
Selective Action
Acts on dead/damaged tissue but spares healthy tissue - mechanism for safety profile.
What to expect
Days 1-7: acute anti-inflammatory effects.
Weeks 1-4: peak effects.
Long-term: as needed.
