Psyllium
Psyllium Husk · Metamucil
Psyllium (Plantago ovata husk) is a soluble fiber supplement widely used for digestive health, cholesterol management, and blood sugar regulation. The husk swells dramatically when hydrated, forming a gel-like mass that adds bulk to stool, slows gastric emptying, and binds bile acids. FDA-approved health claims for cholesterol reduction.
Take with full glass of water (8-12 oz). Inadequate hydration = blockage risk.

How it works
Psyllium acts through several physical and biochemical mechanisms:
Water Absorption
Psyllium husk's hydrocolloid (mucilage) absorbs many times its weight in water, forming a viscous gel. This gel adds bulk to stool and slows transit.
Bulking Effect
Increased stool volume stimulates peristalsis - relief for constipation. The gel also softens stool consistency for easier passage.
Bile Acid Sequestration
Psyllium binds bile acids in the small intestine, preventing reabsorption. The liver then synthesizes new bile acids from cholesterol, lowering serum LDL cholesterol.
Glucose Response Moderation
The viscous gel slows carbohydrate absorption from the small intestine, blunting post-meal glucose spikes - relevant for diabetes/prediabetes management.
Prebiotic Effect
Some psyllium fiber is fermented by colonic bacteria, producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that support gut barrier and microbiome health.
Symptomatic IBS Relief
Both diarrhea-predominant and constipation-predominant IBS may benefit - psyllium's gel-forming nature normalizes stool consistency.
What to expect
Days 1-7: GI adaptation period; bloating common.
Weeks 1-4: peak GI and metabolic effects.
Long-term: sustained CV, GI, and glucose benefits.
