Methylcobalamin is the methylated, bioactive form of vitamin B12 - one of two coenzyme forms (the other being adenosylcobalamin). Distinct from cyanocobalamin (synthetic form requiring conversion) and hydroxocobalamin (intermediate form). Methylcobalamin is the form used in methionine synthase to convert homocysteine to methionine - a critical methylation cycle reaction.

How it works

Methylcobalamin functions as direct B12 coenzyme:

Methionine Synthase Cofactor

Methylcobalamin is the active form for the methionine synthase reaction (homocysteine + 5-MTHF → methionine + tetrahydrofolate). Critical methylation cycle hub.

Direct Bioactive Form

Skips the conversion step required for cyanocobalamin (which must release cyanide and be re-methylated).

Neurological Function

Required for myelin synthesis, peripheral nerve function, and cognitive function.

Hematopoiesis

B12 is required for DNA synthesis - hence the megaloblastic anemia of B12 deficiency.

Cyanocobalamin Comparison

Methylcobalamin is theoretically preferred for users with neurological symptoms; clinical comparisons show modest advantage at higher doses.
