Magnesium Malate is a magnesium salt of malic acid, providing 6.5% elemental magnesium plus malic acid - an intermediate in the citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle) for cellular energy production. The combination is positioned as the preferred magnesium form for fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and energy/muscle support due to malate's role in mitochondrial ATP production. Like other magnesium salts, magnesium malate addresses widespread magnesium inadequacy in modern diets while malate provides additional metabolic support.
Starting dose. 1g — ~130mg elemental Mg

How it works
Magnesium is essential for hundreds of enzymes including those involved in ATP production - virtually every cellular ATP molecule exists as Mg-ATP complex. Magnesium also supports calcium channel function (preventing excessive calcium influx that drives muscle cramping and excitotoxicity), GABA receptor function (anxiolytic effects), and NMDA receptor regulation.
The malate component enters the citric acid cycle (where malate dehydrogenase converts malate to oxaloacetate, generating NADH for the electron transport chain) and provides modest support for mitochondrial ATP production. This is the rationale for fibromyalgia/CFS use - patients with mitochondrial dysfunction may benefit from substrate-level support of the citric acid cycle.
Beyond enzymatic effects, magnesium has direct effects on smooth muscle (vascular relaxation, modest BP reduction), neuromuscular junction function (reducing hyperexcitability), and HPA axis modulation (cortisol response). Sleep quality effects appear mediated through GABA enhancement and reduction of nighttime cortisol pulses.
