L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and the upstream precursor to serotonin (via tryptophan hydroxylase → 5-HTP → serotonin) and melatonin. Naturally found in turkey, dairy, eggs, and other protein sources. Supplementation is used for sleep, mood, and as a tryptophan-restored vehicle in serotonin biosynthesis.

How it works
L-Tryptophan is upstream of 5-HTP in the serotonin pathway:
Tryptophan Hydroxylase
TPH converts L-tryptophan to 5-HTP (rate-limiting step). Then AADC converts 5-HTP to serotonin.
Slower, More Physiologic
TPH-rate-limited conversion produces gentler serotonin elevation than direct 5-HTP supplementation.
Melatonin Pathway
Serotonin → melatonin in pineal gland - sleep support mechanism.
Competing for Brain Entry
L-Tryptophan competes with branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) for transport across BBB. Carbohydrate-rich snack increases insulin, lowering BCAAs and improving tryptophan brain entry - basis of 'turkey makes you sleepy' folklore.
