Citrus Bergamot

Bergamot Polyphenols · Bergamonte

500-1,000mg standardized BPF – 500-1000 mg Oral 1-2x daily with meals

Citrus bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a fragrant citrus fruit grown almost exclusively in Calabria, southern Italy. While the essential oil is famous for flavoring Earl Grey tea and perfumery, bergamot polyphenolic fraction (BPF) extracted from the fruit's juice has emerged as one of the most clinically validated natural agents for cholesterol and metabolic syndrome management.

Take with meals to reduce GI effects and optimize absorption. Split dosing (AM + PM) maintains steadier blood levels for chronic lipid management. Effects develop over 4-12 weeks - retest lipids at 12 weeks.

How it works

BPF flavonoids (especially brutieridin and melitidin) contain a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaric acid moiety that mimics statins and inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. This is mechanistically the same target as statin medications, though with lower potency.

BPF inhibits intestinal cholesterol absorption (similar to ezetimibe-like mechanism), reducing total cholesterol load.

PCSK9 reduction: BPF reduces PCSK9 levels, leading to increased LDL receptor expression on hepatocytes and enhanced LDL clearance from circulation. This is the mechanism PCSK9 inhibitor drugs target.

Insulin signaling: BPF improves insulin receptor sensitivity and downstream PI3K/Akt signaling, reducing insulin resistance in metabolic syndrome.

Antioxidant: BPF flavonoids directly scavenge ROS and induce antioxidant enzyme expression (catalase, SOD, GSH-Px).

Anti-inflammatory: NF-kB inhibition reduces TNF-alpha, IL-6, and CRP - relevant to atherosclerosis progression.

Endothelial function: improvements in eNOS expression and NO bioavailability, supporting vasodilation.

Dose/route boundary: 1,000 mg/day oral bergamot polyphenolic fraction was given for eight weeks, matching the top of the page’s amount but not its with-meals or twice-daily instructions.

Twenty outpatients treated with second-generation antipsychotics assumed BPF at an oral daily dose of 1000 mg/d for 8 weeks.

Bergamot Polyphenolic Fraction Supplementation Improves Cognitive Functioning in Schizophrenia: Data From an 8-Week, Open-Label Pilot Study. Journal of clinical psychopharmacology · 2017 · PMID 28591067

Evidence scope. Human open-label pilot study in 20 adults with schizophrenia receiving second-generation antipsychotics; cognitive outcomes, not a lipid-management population or randomized trial.

Safety boundary: orally administered bergamot in clinical studies was consistently well tolerated over 30 days to 12 weeks.

The use of bergamot in multiple clinical trials has consistently shown that it is well tolerated in studies ranging from 30 days to 12 weeks.

Clinical application of bergamot (Citrus bergamia) for reducing high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease markers. Integrative food, nutrition and metabolism · 2019 · PMID 31057945

Evidence scope. Mini-review of heterogeneous oral bergamot forms in hypercholesterolemia studies; does not establish long-term safety beyond 12 weeks or the exact page formulation.

Claims we could not support

No abstract we checked supports these for this molecule at this route. That is not the same as saying they are false — it marks where the evidence is missing.

Exact quick-start regimen: 500-1,000 mg standardized BPF orally 1-2 times daily with meals. The checked exact-dose abstract supports 1,000 mg orally once daily in a schizophrenia pilot, not the complete frequency, meal timing, or lipid-management population on the page.

Mechanism: direct statin-like HMG-CoA reductase inhibition plus the page’s other pathways. The checked cell-study abstract (PMID 34579033) explicitly reported that bergamot fruit extract and its constituents did not directly inhibit HMG-CoA reductase activity; it instead observed lower HMGCR levels and increased AMPK phosphorylation. The page’s direct-inhibition claim was therefore not cited.

Interactions & stacking

Two different questions: what is documented about running these together, and what is documented about drawing them into the same syringe. A good pharmacological partner can still have to be pinned separately.

Documented together

Most cardiovascular supplementsGenerally synergistic with red yeast rice (caution - both have statin-like activity), niacin, plant sterols.
Olive Leaf ExtractMollace et al. 2019 demonstrated additive lipid-lowering when combined with BPF. Both polyphenol-rich Mediterranean traditions.
BerberineBoth reduce LDL via different mechanisms - berberine via PCSK9 and gut absorption, BPF via HMG-CoA reductase. Additive lipid lowering.
Omega-3Complementary lipid effects - omega-3 strongly reduces triglycerides, BPF reduces LDL/PCSK9. Common cardiometabolic stack.

Keep separate

Statins (synergistic but monitor)BPF potentiates statin effects via shared HMG-CoA mechanism - this allows lower statin dose with equivalent LDL reduction (Gliozzi RCT). However, watch for excessive lipid lowering or muscle complaints. Coordinate with prescriber.
Red Yeast Rice (additive statin-like effect)Both have statin-like HMG-CoA inhibition. Combined effects may be excessive - choose one.
PCSK9 InhibitorsBPF reduces PCSK9 - additive effect with PCSK9 inhibitors (alirocumab, evolocumab). Generally well-tolerated but coordinate with prescriber.
Hypoglycemic medicationsBPF improves insulin sensitivity - may potentiate hypoglycemia with diabetes medications.

Check any specific pair in the Stack & Interaction Checker, which answers both questions separately. Absence of a documented conflict is not evidence of safety.
