Citrus bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a fragrant citrus fruit grown almost exclusively in Calabria, southern Italy. While the essential oil is famous for flavoring Earl Grey tea and perfumery, bergamot polyphenolic fraction (BPF) extracted from the fruit's juice has emerged as one of the most clinically validated natural agents for cholesterol and metabolic syndrome management.,BPF is uniquely rich in flavonoids (especially neoeriocitrin, neohesperidin, naringin, melitidin, and brutieridin) which have HMG-CoA reductase inhibitory activity (the same enzyme statins target) plus additional benefits on inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin signaling.
