SR-9009 (Stenabolic) is a non-hormonal Rev-erb alpha agonist developed by Thomas Burris at The Scripps Research Institute as a research tool for studying circadian biology and metabolic disease. It is commonly grouped with SARMs in the research-chemical market but is NOT a SARM - it does not bind the androgen receptor, does not suppress testosterone, and does not produce androgen-related effects. Instead it activates Rev-erb, a nuclear receptor and core circadian regulator that controls metabolic gene expression, mitochondrial biogenesis, and inflammation.

Short half-life (2-4 hours) means most users split doses 2-4 times per day for continuous coverage. A common protocol is 10-15mg every 4-6 hours during waking hours. No PCT needed. Cycles typically 6-12 weeks.

NO HUMAN TRIAL HAS EVER BEEN CONDUCTED - not Phase 1, not a PK study. Every efficacy result comes from rodents dosed by INTRAPERITONEAL INJECTION, and measured oral bioavailability is under 5%, so an oral dose likely delivers very little. A 2019 study found SR9009 still altered cell metabolism in mice engineered to lack BOTH REV-ERB receptors, so even the "REV-ERB agonist" premise is unsupported. How it works

SR-9009 is a synthetic agonist of Rev-erb alpha and Rev-erb beta, nuclear receptors that function as core components of the circadian clock. Activation of Rev-erb represses transcription of target genes including BMAL1 (a central circadian driver) and multiple metabolic genes. Downstream effects in preclinical models include increased mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle, increased fatty acid and glucose metabolism, reduced inflammation, and altered sleep-wake patterns.

It does NOT bind the androgen receptor and does not produce any of the classic SARM or AAS side effects - no HPT-axis suppression, no estrogen or DHT effects, no aromatization, no virilization risk. It does not require post-cycle therapy. It is commonly stacked with SARMs or Cardarine as a non-hormonal metabolic add-on.

The critical pharmacokinetic limitation: SR-9009 has very poor oral bioavailability. Published rodent PK indicates oral bioavailability well under 5%, with rapid hepatic clearance and a short half-life (2-4 hours). The vast majority of published preclinical efficacy data was generated using intraperitoneal injection at doses that would require very large oral doses to approximate. Users taking oral SR-9009 often dose multiple times per day (2-4 doses) to partially compensate - but the bioavailability ceiling still limits realistic effect size. This is the single most important fact about the compound that is rarely highlighted in marketing.

What to expect

Early
Days 1–7

First 1-2 weeks: subtle effects if any. Onset is less dramatic than Cardarine given the short half-life and poor oral bioavailability.

Mid
Weeks 2–4

Weeks 3-5: modest body composition benefit during a deficit, some endurance improvement.

Later
Weeks 4–12

Weeks 6-10: continued modest benefit. Plan cycle-off at 10-12 weeks.

Side effects & safety

Commonly reported

  • No hormonal side effects (does not bind the androgen receptor)
  • Sleep disturbance if dosed late in the day (circadian / Rev-erb effect)
  • Mild GI upset possible

Less common & notes

  • Mild headache, mild fatigue paradoxically in some users, transient blood sugar shifts, vivid dreams or altered sleep architecture due to Rev-erb circadian effects.
  • Long-term safety at off-label doses is unstudied.
  • No published human safety signals.

Bioavailability

Very poor oral bioavailability (reported well under 5% in rodent PK). Most preclinical efficacy was demonstrated via intraperitoneal injection, not oral dosing.

Clearance

Rapid hepatic clearance via CYP metabolism. Short plasma half-life.

Storage. Store at controlled room temperature (20-25°C / 68-77°F). Protect from moisture and light. Keep capsules in original container with desiccant when available. Liquid suspensions should be kept sealed and used within 12 months of opening. Shelf life typically 2-3 years from manufacture date for capsules, 1-2 years for liquid. Keep out of reach of children.

Regulatory status

SR-9009 (Stenabolic) is NOT FDA-approved for any indication. Classified as a research chemical in the United States - not a controlled substance federally as of this writing, but banned by WADA, USADA, the NCAA, and most professional sports leagues. FDA has issued warnings against SARM-like sales in over-the-counter dietary supplements. Use falls outside regulated medical practice.
