Rosemary oil is an essential oil distilled from the leaves of Rosmarinus officinalis, used topically on the scalp for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) and general hair-thinning support. Its best-known human data come from a 6-month randomized comparative trial in which a rosemary oil preparation matched minoxidil 2% for hair-count improvement while causing less scalp itching.

Starting dose. Diluted to ~2-5% in a carrier oil, massaged into scalp

Apply to a clean scalp, massage 2-5 minutes, leave on (or per product directions). Allow 3-6 months. Always dilute - undiluted essential oil can irritate.

Start here. Every protocol below is ordered lowest-first. Begin at the smallest effective dose, hold about a week to assess tolerance, and step up only if needed.

How it works

Rosemary oil's proposed hair-relevant mechanisms are topical and indirect:

Scalp Microcirculation

Rosemary is thought to improve local blood flow to the follicle, increasing delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the dermal papilla - a rationale shared with minoxidil's vasodilatory effect.

Antioxidant / Anti-inflammatory

Rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, and carnosol scavenge free radicals and dampen perifollicular inflammation, which can contribute to miniaturization in pattern hair loss.

Possible 5-alpha-reductase / DHT modulation

Some preclinical work suggests rosemary constituents may mildly inhibit the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the androgen that drives follicle miniaturization in androgenetic alopecia. This is mechanistic / animal-level, not proven in humans.

Antimicrobial scalp effects

Rosemary's antimicrobial activity may support a healthier scalp environment.

What to expect

Early
Days 1–7

Weeks 1-8: scalp may feel cleaner / less itchy; no hair change yet.

Mid
Weeks 2–4

Month 3: typically no significant hair-count change yet.

Later
Weeks 4–12

Months 4-6: modest hair-count improvement possible in responders.

Claims we could not support

No abstract we checked supports these for this molecule at this route. That is not the same as saying they are false — it marks where the evidence is missing.

Complete regimen: Diluted to ~2-5% in a carrier oil, massaged into scalp via Topical (scalp), 1x daily or as directed. The verified row supports only the narrower dose/route boundary stated above, not every element of the displayed regimen.

No checked live abstract supported this full mechanistic claim at the card's formulation/route without extrapolation.

Primary safety claim: Scalp irritation / itching (especially if under-diluted). No checked live abstract directly established this as the primary concern for the card's exact formulation and regimen.
