Pumpkin Seed Oil
PSO · Cucurbita pepo seed oil
Pumpkin seed oil (PSO) is pressed from the seeds of Cucurbita pepo and is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols (notably beta-sitosterol and delta-7-sterols), tocopherols (vitamin E), and carotenoids. For hair, interest centers on its phytosterol content, which is thought to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase and exert mild anti-androgen activity - the same pathway targeted in androgenetic alopecia.
Daily with food. Allow 3-6 months for any hair response. Single small trial - manage expectations.

How it works
Pumpkin seed oil's proposed hair mechanisms are largely androgen-pathway and nutritional:
Phytosterol 5-Alpha-Reductase Inhibition
Beta-sitosterol and other delta-7 phytosterols in PSO are proposed to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, reducing conversion of testosterone to DHT - the androgen that miniaturizes susceptible scalp follicles. This is the most-cited rationale, drawn largely from animal/anti-androgen data.
Mild Anti-Androgen Activity
Animal studies show antiandrogenic effects of PSO components, supporting a plausible mechanism for slowing pattern hair loss.
Fatty Acids and Tocopherols
Unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E provide antioxidant and scalp-conditioning support; carotenoids and phytoestrogens may contribute minor secondary effects.
Oral vs Topical
The key clinical trial used oral PSO (400 mg/day). Separate animal work has explored topical PSO. Mechanistic specificity for the human scalp follicle remains incompletely characterized.
What to expect
Weeks 1-8: minimal subjective change.
Weeks 8-16: possible reduced shedding.
Months 3-6: modest hair-count changes if responsive.

Side effects & safety
Commonly reported
- Mild GI upset at higher oil intakes
- Belching / oily aftertaste
Less common & notes
- Mild blood-pressure lowering.
- Allergic reaction (rare).
- Generally very well tolerated as a food-grade oil.
Pharmacokinetics
Storage. Store cool and dark; refrigerate after opening to limit oxidation of unsaturated oils.
Regulatory status
Dietary supplement / food oil (US, DSHEA). Not an FDA-approved drug for hair loss.
