Nattokinase is a fibrinolytic enzyme isolated from natto (fermented soybeans), a traditional Japanese food. Discovered by Dr. Hiroyuki Sumi in 1987. Active in breaking down fibrin clots - the same protein dissolved by tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and other thrombolytic drugs.

How it works

Nattokinase has fibrinolytic activity:

Direct Fibrin Cleavage

Hydrolyzes fibrin in clots - same target as tPA but oral bioavailability allows daily prevention rather than acute thrombolysis.

Fibrinogen Reduction

Lowers serum fibrinogen levels - reduces clot-formation potential.

Plasmin Activation

Indirectly enhances endogenous fibrinolytic system.

Blood Pressure

Modest BP reduction in clinical trials, mechanism unclear (possibly via ACE inhibition).

Acid Stability

More acid-stable than serrapeptase, but enteric coating still preferred for full activity.
